We spend such a large chunk of our lives working and there is so much potential to make everything we do during that time a whole lot more meaningful. Businesses can - and must - be better and do better. So, using coffee as our medium, Bettr Barista Coffee Academy was born in 2011. We work every day to conduct our business in ways that are socially, ethically and environmentally conscious so that everyone we touch is empowered to be the best version of themselves and keep pushing the envelope on what we can achieve, all while doing great work. From the marginalised communities that we establish relationships and work with, to the socially conscious corporations who choose us at their service partner, we're changing lives through coffee at every touchpoint.
At the heart of our business is one-of-a-kind programme for marginalised women and youth. Out social approach is three-fold and combines professional coffee education and certification with physical and mental training through yoga and outdoor adventure activities like rock climbing. the third and very crucial element of the programme is emotional training and life skills management. Programme participants gain access to world class coffee education, paid internships through our network of established industry partners, ongoing support via our alumni and mentoring activities and much more.
There are stories every day, 80% of participants in our Holistic Training Programme graduate and go on to build long-term careers for themselves in speciaty coffee and other industries or return to school to further their education. Some are also now employed full-time with us as lead baristas at events and trainers in our Academy. Everything that happens under our roof to make more of these milestones a reality means that there's a real vibe of warmth and goodness amidst the fun and chaos that characterizes any given day, and that impacts everyone who touches the brand.
I think there is often a general misconception that social businesses are below-par in terms of quality and standards of delivery. In addition to this, there is further misconception that oscial businesses are charities, which we are not. We are for profit but with purpose. A conscious purpose to give back and suppor tthe ocmmunity, its memebrs and the world around us and to operate a business where the principles and operations are conscious and social and environmental factors. This leads to challenges of balancing commerical needs and ethical and social needs thato ur business piroritises. I hope that through our ongoing work, we can keep raising the profile of B Corporations, our quality offerings and what we stand for so that we can collectively continue to drive ALL businesses to a higher purpose and standards while being profitable.
Our social purpose is founded on this belief in the power of business to exert influence and effect change. Everything we do links back to creating a positive impact - not just the marginalised groups we work with, but at every touch-point of our business, forom our employees and clients to the communities that we reach all along our supply chain. As Singapore's first B Corp certified business, we hope more businesses join us in this movement of interdependency towards doing better business profitably.
