Circus in Motion

A chance meeting with Cirque Du Soliel’ s social arm, Cirque Du Monde left me very intrigued with how they work with street kids and youths at risk using circus arts. During training with the social circus instructors from around the Asia Pacific, I was moved by how the instructors from Mongolia would look for street kids living under tunnels during winter to work with them and link them up with help. At Circus in Motion, we believe in offering alternatives to youths. Circus arts are an alternative and by offering variety within the arts, we ensure that each youth find their own strengths.
We have managed to merge the academic with circus arts. For instance, we use circus arts to reinforce memory techniques and also use circus arts to teach mind mapping strategies.
It has to be a Secondary 2 boy from a school that we were teaching in. His tattoos could be seen as they extended below his school shorts onto his thighs. He had spiked the teacher’s drink with paracetamol and created a lot of problems both in and out of school. But, with out help, he discovered his strengths in circus arts. Typical youths would only specialise in performing with one prop, usually due to time constraints within our programme. But this boy worked really hard and specialised in two in the same time. By the end of 13 weeks, he could even go on stage and perform complex routines like fire twirling. His teachers saw him differently after that.
For us, the main challenge is that our chosen medium, circus arts, is neither a sport or an art. Thus, there is a lack of available funding. However, we have overcome this by selling circus as entertainment for corporate events and also using circus as a medium when we conduct team building programmes.
We hope to reach out to more schools in Singapore and perhaps introduce a new art form which we can impart to the physically disabled. Lastly we would also like to create a brand of Singapore circus in which our talents can be showcased abroad, something that is uniquely Singapore.
